Signs of Overwatering Plants in San Francisco

San Francisco summers run cool enough that plants drink far less than the calendar says, so a daily-watering habit is the quietest way to hurt one. Here's what too much water actually looks like.

The tomato in the half-barrel is yellowing from the bottom up and flopping by mid-afternoon, so you water it again. Two weeks later it's worse. In San Francisco that sequence is common enough to be a rule, because the signs of overwatering look almost exactly like thirst, and a city that never delivers a hot, dry July hands you plenty of chances to make the mistake.

Why overwatering happens

Most of the country waters against heat. A plant in a Midwestern August pulls water up through its leaves all day, the bed bakes, and a skipped watering shows within hours. Nearly every piece of watering advice online was written for that garden.

Now put the same bed in the Outer Sunset in July. The afternoon sits at 60°F under gray, the air is damp, and the plant is transpiring at a fraction of that rate. The soil is barely evaporating either. Water it on a hot-climate schedule and the root zone never gets a chance to drain and breathe in between.

The fog decides this, and it changes block to block. A raised bed in Bernal Heights or the Mission, where the gray burns off by noon, may genuinely want water two or three times a week in summer. The same bed on the ocean side can go a week and still be damp at three inches.

Root rot: decay of the root system by soil-dwelling water molds such as Pythium and Phytophthora, which spread and infect only where there is free water in the soil. Saturated soil also pushes the air out of the pore spaces roots need, so a drowning plant usually suffocates first and gets infected second.

The signs of overwatering

Start at the bottom of the plant. Older, lower leaves yellow first while the newest growth still looks passable, and the whole plant seems to have stopped bothering. Slow growth plus wilting is the classic aboveground picture of a root system that has quit working, which is exactly what root rot produces. A plant that has put on almost nothing in three weeks of decent weather is rarely asking for more water.

Check the stem where it meets the soil. Healthy tissue there is firm. Overwatered tissue goes soft, dark, and slightly sunken, and on a seedling it collapses outright. That's damping-off: stem tissue near the soil line decays and weakens, and the seedling topples over and dies. Seedlings growing slowly in cold, wet soil are the most vulnerable of all, which here means February pea and lettuce sowings sitting in a bed that hasn't drained since the last storm.

Look at the soil surface. A green film, a crust of algae, or moss and liverwort spreading across potting mix all say the same thing: the top inch hasn't dried in weeks. Bare soil in a working bed should go pale and crumbly on top between waterings.

Watch for fungus gnats. Those small dark flies that skitter across the surface and lift off in a puff when you water breed in constantly moist soil. The fix doubles as the diagnosis: because they thrive in moist conditions, avoid overwatering, provide good drainage, and let the surface of container soil dry between waterings.

Turn a few leaves over and look for edema, the most San Francisco symptom on this list. Wet soil plus cool, cloudy, humid weather lets roots absorb water faster than the leaves can transpire it away, and the excess ruptures leaf tissue into small blisters or warts, often brown or tan, about 1/16 inch across. A gray, humid week in June is precisely those conditions.

Edema: blister-like bumps on leaves and stems caused by roots taking up more water than the plant can release. It's a water-balance disorder, not a disease, so no spray helps. Drier soil and better air movement do.

Root crops keep their own record. Overwatered carrots rot or develop enlarged white "eyes," and come up hairy, forked, and misshapen instead of clean and straight. Since carrots grow through most of the SF year, that's a mistake you can repeat in any season.

Wilting or drowning?

Wilting on its own tells you nothing. Leaves wilt whenever they lose water faster than the roots deliver it, and roots stop delivering in both directions: when there is no water left to take up, and when they have rotted in soil that stayed saturated too long. That's why a plant with root rot will wilt in mud.

One check settles it. Before you touch the hose, push a finger, or a wooden chopstick, two to three inches down into the root zone. If it comes out cool and damp and the plant is still wilting, the problem is too much water, and watering again will deepen it. If it comes out dry and dusty at that depth, you're looking at the other problem entirely, and the signs of underwatering are the guide you want.

Check the roots

For anything in a container, the definitive check takes thirty seconds: support the stem, tip the pot, and slide the root ball out.

Healthy roots are firm and pale, white to tan, and they hold their shape when you rub them. Rotted roots are soft and brown, easy to pull apart, and the outer sheath often slips off between your fingers leaving a thread behind. On tomatoes, damaged roots start out water-soaked, then dry and turn chocolate brown as the rot progresses. A sour, swampy smell off the root ball confirms it.

If most of the root ball is still firm, the plant can come back: stop watering and let the top few inches dry before you touch it again. If the roots are mush throughout, that crop's finished, and the useful move is fixing the drainage before you plant the next one.

Drainage and containers

Overwatering is only half the problem. The other half is water with nowhere to go.

Start with the container. A pot with no drainage hole, however handsome, is a bucket: every drop you pour in stays until the plant uses it. A saucer left full is nearly as bad, because the bottom inch of mix wicks that water back up and stays saturated. Empty saucers within half an hour of watering. And a container on a foggy back patio works against you twice over, with no direct sun and no warm wind, so a pot that would dry in a day in Bernal can hold water for the better part of a week in the avenues.

Beds have their own version. Plenty of San Francisco backyards are compacted fill rather than real topsoil, and water sits on top of that layer instead of moving through it. The fix is blunt: improve drainage in compacted, waterlogged soils, use raised planting beds, and don't put seeds or transplants into cold, wet, compacted ground. How to water instead

The habit worth building is simple. Check first, water second, and let the soil rather than the day of the week decide.

How deep to check depends on the crop. Lettuce is content in as little as 6 to 10 inches of soil, so the top couple of inches is a fair proxy for its whole root zone. A tomato wants 18 to 24 inches, so a damp inch on top says almost nothing about where its roots actually live. When you do water, wet that whole zone, then leave it strictly alone until it dries down. Watering less often, with good drainage, is the first line against soggy-soil damage.

Then adjust across the SF year. A gray, overcast July week in the fog belt may keep an established bed going on one deep watering; the same week in a warm inland pocket may take two or three. Containers still want daily attention, though attention means checking, not pouring: water when the surface has actually dried.

From roughly November through March the rain usually does the job and the hose can stay coiled. That's also when overwatering does its worst damage here, because cold, wet, slow-growing seedlings are what damping-off pathogens wait for. Winter sowings of peas and greens want a bed that drains, not a bed topped up out of habit. Let the fog help

Restraint is a real technique here. A plant sulking in wet soil is asking for air around its roots, not another drink, and the fastest way to become a better waterer in San Francisco is to spend two weeks feeling the soil at three inches before every single watering. Are fungus gnats a sign of overwatering?

Usually. They breed in constantly moist soil with plenty of decaying organic matter, so a puff of small flies off a pot means the surface hasn't dried out in a while. The fix is the same as the diagnosis: better drainage, less frequent watering, and letting the container surface dry between waterings.
